How to Use Content + Social Media for Link Building

Have you ever wanted to send out a link request to thousands of people without being a spammer? Now you can, thanks to social media. Let’s look at the ways you can use great content + social media to establish trust, build an audience of bloggers who love to link out, get exposure for your link worthy content, and learn how social media really affects your link profile.
Establish Yourself on Social Networks
Whether you are sending out standard link requests, link exchange requests (not advised, but still happens), guest post requests, or any other types of link building correspondence, you will have more success if the webmasters and bloggers see you as a real person, not a nameless, faceless link builder. Simply including a link to your Twitter or Google+ profile in an email signature adds a personal element to your request, giving the recipient a chance to check you out and learn more about you.
For email recipients using Gmail, this is especially true as emails are connected to Google+ profiles, making it easy for Gmail users to spot a real person vs. someone who is using a throwaway email. Note that your Google+ profile picture and latest updates make a big difference for Gmail users – just having an account doesn’t cut it as this is what they will get.

Build a Network of Bloggers
As you are building your social audience on Twitter, Google+, and other networks you set up, aim for bloggers in verticals that align with the websites you are building links to. Google likes editorial links, and there’s no better in-content link than those that come naturally from bloggers. Note that I didn’t say blog networks like the ones Google has shut down lately, but links from real bloggers.
Aim for bloggers that are active on Twitter, retweet others often, and engage directly with others. You can start your search using the Followerwonk profile search for your vertical keywords plus blogger, blog, etc.
insurance blogger
You can perform a similar keyword search to find blogging connections on Google+. As you build this audience, be sure to engage with them and retweet / share their posts often. The more bloggers that have you on their radar, the more links you are likely to receive.

Create Content for Particular Social Networks
The more social visibility you get on social networks, the better your chances are of getting links to your content. Try creating content in your verticals that will be instant winners on particular social networks like The Top 50 People Tweeting About _____ and 25 Great Google+ Communities on _____. Topics like those tend to do well on their related social network.

Make Your Content Shareworthy
Don’t just expect your content to do well based on your own promotion. Help your content out by making it easily shareable on social networks by using social sharing buttons. WordPress users can install the Digg Digg plugin to quickly add a variety of social sharing buttons to their posts and pages. No matter what you use, make sure your plugin includes the official Twitter, Facebook, and Google +1 button.

Share in Social Network Groups
Expand the reach of your content even further by sharing your content in social network groups – Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, and Google+ communities in particular. Check the rules or latest activity for the groups you join first. If you see lots of content sharing, and those shares tend to have reactions (likes, +1’s, comments, reshares, etc.), then it’s a safe bet that the content you share (assuming it’s relevant and quality) will get noticed.

While there are many tools to post updates to your social media accounts, there aren’t many to post to social groups. Oktopost is a great tool to post status updates to LinkedIn groups and see click stats. PlumSocial supposedly helps you update your Facebook groups, but their website is confusing and their own Facebook is auto-updated and covered in spam, so I can’t guarantee this is a legit tool.

Reach Out to Bloggers Who Link Out Often
Recap posts are popular in the online marketing industry, and probably in other verticals as well. Some examples of recap posts include SearchCap, Marketing Day, Fresh Pressed, 5 Links, Fetching Friday, Brilliant Bloggers, and SEO Content Marketing Roundup.
Find the bloggers who post regular recap posts like the examples above and really start engaging with them. If you create quality content, chances are those bloggers will start to notice your content and will start to link to you.
If you get to know the blogger behind the recap really well, and you have a piece of content that you know they will love, you can even make a personal request via their contact form to consider your content for their next recap. Aim to send your request as soon as your content starts getting social traction from other social promotion. This way, the blogger will see that the content has a lot of shares already, making it irresistible for their recap.
See How Social Affects Links
So does creating link worthy content and then promoting it on social media really help increase the number of links to your website? Now you can find out. CognitiveSEO has added social visibility analysis that looks at your number of incoming referring domains vs. the social shares of your pages on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.
referring domains
You will also find charts for the total number of social shares your website has received, the pages with an increased number of social shares within a specific time period, the pages with the most number of social shares throughout your website, and the individual networks vs. referring domains. You can also sort a full chart by number of shares each social network and referring domains.
number of social shares
This can help you determine if ongoing social sharing is making a difference on your link profile. It can also help you easily monitor the success of your content on social media.

The Future-Proof Link Building Strategy

The Future-Proof Link Building Strategy
Never worry about algorithm updates again by aligning with search engines.
What if I told you that it was possible to build high-quality links at 1/10th of the price and effort? Would you troll this post? Before you consider doing so, allow me to explain.
Search engines are getting smarter. Specifically, the groundbreaking Panda and Penguin technologies have finally enabled algorithmic segmentation of good vs. bad content and linking sources. No longer is it possible to earn visibility in organic search through content that’s simply “relevant” or contains the right keywords. The imperative of quality content is no longer an “ivory tower” request—it’s now a requirement for success in search.
The strategy outlined in the eBook The Enterprise Marketer’s Future-Proof Link Building Strategy: Search Engine Optimization in a Post-Penguin 2.0 World is truly future-proof because it aligns with the “why” behind search engine technology. Old tactics focused on the “what” behind search engine technology, and the “what” in SEO changes faster than any other industry. Aligning fundamentally with why search engines exist allows your organization to transcend the technological piece (the “what”) of search technology and position for long-term success.
Search engines exist to deliver the most relevant content that solves problems or entertains users. Creating content that solves problems or entertains your market is only half the battle. The market isn’t going to simply discover the great content that you create. A robust earned media strategy is necessary to get your great content in front of your target audience on popular and relevant websites to enable fast and efficient discovery by search engines. When implemented correctly, this process builds hundreds of links and mentions through just a few media placements. In the results example, we earned 894 mentions from just one of the high-profile earned media placements.
At a high level, the strategy consists of creating and promoting great content. The tactical process is broken up into four sections: Research, Creative, Promotion and Conversion.

Research

A future-proof SEO campaign is a highly targeted effort that requires a complete understanding of customer personas. An efficient research process is necessary to gather the knowledge required to develop remarkable content that will educate, inform and entertain a target audience. Online media outlets, blogs, digital communities and social media influencers must find genuine value in the content in order to earn the powerful media placements that fuel an earned media campaign.
Online Persona Discovery
  • Gather all current marketing persona information at your organization.
  • Use tools like Google Analytics, Google Adwords Keyword Tool, Open Site Explorer and Experian Hitwise to gather data about who your personas are and where they hang out.
Content Idea Generation
- Use the information to generate ideas for your content that will solve a problem, inform or entertain your personas.

Creative

The creative process sets the stage for the success or failure of a future-proof linkbuilding campaign. If the content isn’t genuinely informative, educational and entertaining, online media outlets won’t share it with their audiences. Put maximum effort into creating remarkable content that really stands out, and it will earn media placements and be shared socially.
Content Design and Development
  • Control costs with a well-defined project management plan
  • Involve industry influencers as project stakeholders during the design process
  • Always use professional design and copywriting resources

Promotion

If relevant content is the engine, promotion is the gasoline. Having an “if you build it, they will come” mentality is great for the design phase, but the future-proof linkbuilding strategy is about maximizing marketing ROI. The best way to propel a project like a rocket is to place teaser articles that get your content in front of target personas.
Build the Teaser Article
  • Include the best highlights from your content
  • Don’t make it sales-y
  • Outreach and build connections with the most popular and relevant industry websites

Conversion

Before the inbound links and search engine results come rolling in, there are a number of short-term returns generated by the future-proof link building strategy that shouldn’t be ignored. Conversion goals, such as leads, opt-in email list generation and referral traffic, are met in the short run, while traffic goals like keyword portfolio growth and organic search traffic are met over the long term. The immediate goals focus on converting users with a targeted landing page and calls to action.

Results

An example of this strategy in action is the Enterprise Blog Post Optimization Guide. This piece of content solved a problem common to our target demographic. After doing research and interviewing enterprise marketers, we discovered that a lack of strategy and process around blogging was a common challenge. We addressed this challenge with a guide that educated our audience and solved a common problem.

The guide received more than 800 mentions through online syndications, thousands of social mentions and even placement in print publications. This cascade of high-quality digital signals contributed to a high level of organic search engine visibility for keywords related to blog post optimization. After continuing to release more contribution campaigns, we have seen a bump across the board for all keyword visibility.
With each step of the earned media process, you will help your team and your brand build a strategy that’s more than future-proof—it’s foolproof. Download The Enterprise Marketer’s Future-Proof Link Building Strategy: Search Engine Optimization in a Post-Penguin 2.0 World today and get started on creating content that will drive interest, traffic and conversions.

Google’s Disavow Tool: What You Need to Know, and 4 Common Myths

In the aftermath of Google’s Penguin 2.0 update, more attention is being paid to sites’ link profiles. Whether your objective is a complete link audit and rebuild or simply removing a questionable link from your site’s history, the good news is that there are several ways to do it. If requests to webmasters go unanswered, Google’s Disavow Tool lets you report links you’d rather that the search engine ignore.
But as with any new tool, it’s surrounded by a number of concerns and even what I’d call myths. Here’s what you need to know to make the most of Google Disavow and avoid critical missteps that could hurt your site’s rankings in the long-run.

What is Google Disavow?
The Disavow tool was rolled out last year. Its purpose is simple: If there are some unsavory websites in your link profile, Google Disavow can help you clean them up. The tool lets you submit a list of those sites from bad neighborhoods for Google’s consideration. Disavow will not remove the links, but it lets Google know you’d like to ignore them when it comes to your search rankings. But know this: the tool is not a cure all, and you should proceed with caution if you plan to use it as the primary means of cleaning up your link profile.
Why the limitations? Let’s start at the beginning. Google’s chief spam fighter, Matt Cutts, said in a video that it’s important to use the tool judiciously. Instead of wholesale uploading every bad link to your site via the tool, consider it as your last resort. He specifically says that Google expects you to reach out to webmasters multiple times before resorting to Google Disavow.
To repeat: Google wants you to take steps to have the links removed before you begin disavowing. This means identifying the sites and reaching out to them the old fashioned way, with an email request indicating that you’d like the link removed from their website. While sending hundreds or even thousands of emails is time consuming, the time you invest will be worth it because it can help you avoid incurring future penalties. For a detailed overview of how to identify which links need to be disavowed or removed, see my article “How to Know Which Links to Disavow in Google.” If you’re not the DIY-type and would like to have a link audit done for you, look into a professional link profile audit.

What To Do Before You Resort to Disavow
Before you resort to Google Disavow, take the time to launch an outreach campaign to site owners to request that links to your sites are removed. I always recommend a systematic approach. Start a spreadsheet that records the following information:
  • URL/site name
  • Link URL
  • Anchor text
  • URL that it’s linking to
  • Owner name/contact information
  • Records of contacts
Ideally, try reaching out to the site at least three times before adding it to your Disavow file. In terms of what your request should include, keep it very basic. Personalize the message, and ask them to remove the link including the information above. Try sending your messages a week apart, and follow up in an organized way. Use Boomerang for Gmail to automatically remind you if you don’t hear back from a Webmaster. If, after the third try, you still don’t get a response, make a note in your spreadsheet of the dates each message was sent and copy the messages into your spreadsheet.
If you’re under a manual penalty or some other circumstance where you’re submitting a reconsideration request, include this information with your request to Google. That will help prove that you’ve taken serious steps to cleaning up your link profile. Finally, if you reach out to a webmaster and they want to be paid to remove a link, don’t do it. Simply note the request in your spreadsheet, along with a copy of their message, and submit it with your disavow request.

Common Myths About Disavow Tool
While Disavow continues to grow in popularity with webmasters who were hit with Penguin 2.0 penalties, the rumors are beginning to fly. Here’s the truth about four of the most common myths related to Google’s Disavow tool.

1.         Using the Google Disavow Tool Will Hurt My Site
One of the most commonly believed rumors that’s been flying around since Google Disavow was rolled out last October is that it will hurt, rather than help, your website if you use it. The rumor seems to be perpetuated by the strong language that Google uses when describing the Disavow in its Webmaster toolkit. Google says: “This is an advanced feature and should only be used with caution. If used incorrectly, this feature can potentially harm your site’s performance in Google’s search results.” The keyword phrase here that we need to be paying attention to is, “If used incorrectly.”
It’s important that you carefully follow the procedures that Google has outlined. Conduct a thoughtful site audit. If you’re not familiar enough with the tools to do that, hire a professional to conduct a site audit or review the results of your audit with you. At the early stages, it’s most important to formulate a strategy on which links you want to keep and which require further examination and follow up.

2.         Disavowing links to my site causes Google to label me a spammer and hurt my whole web profile
We all make mistakes. If you are guilty of paying for links in the past in an attempt to improve your search rankings and you’ve received a spam warning through Google Webmaster Tools, you’re not alone; and Google is giving you a chance to rectify your mistake.
But first, you want to make sure to show that you’ve made a serious effort to reach out to the webmasters of any shady sites in your profile before using Disavow. The importance of this point is emphasized in the language on Google’s Disavow tool site. Matt Cutts brings up it up repeatedly in articles and interviews.
Proper use of the Disavow tool is not going to cause Google to label you as a spammer, nor will it negatively affect your web profile. In fact, if you’ve already received a spam warning due to bad links and you’re working to make changes to your profile, Disavow can only help. So don’t stress about this one – as long as you’re committed to staying on the straight and narrow from here on out.
To understand why you’re unlikely to immediately and irreparably be labeled a spammer, it’s helpful to look at how the tool functions. Many folks are under the impression that once you list a site, it immediately deletes a link or devalues a site. In fact, Matt Cutts has stated that Google treats disavowed links and sites like suggestions. Once some internal threshold is reached or a manual review is triggered, the search engine takes action. When asked how long Google Disavow takes, Google has suggested weeks or months to be the reasonable timeline.

3.         Google Disavow Is All I Need to Do If I Am Under a Manual Penalty
If you’re under a manual penalty, there are several things that you need to do. First, let’s go ahead and dispel the myth that Google Disavow is the only you tool you need. It’s not. In an interview with Matt Cutts in October 2012, Danny Sullivan asked Matt Cutts whether it’s OK to just use the disavow tool without first attempting to remove links. Cutts’ answer:
“No, I wouldn’t count on this. In particular, Google can look at the snapshot of links we saw when we took manual action. If we don’t see any links actually taken down off the web, then we can see that sites have been disavowing without trying to get the links taken down.”
First, you need a full and impartial view of your current link profile. Then you need to take the necessary steps to clean up your link profile before you begin using Disavow. As you reach out to webmasters requesting that they remove your link from their site, be sure to document it as described above.
Manual penalties are different from those that you may have received when Google rolled out changes to their algorithm. Your site may have been flagged for common black hat tactics like article spinning, keyword stuffing, or an abundance of bad links. Part of the process for getting back in Google’s good graces after receiving a manual penalty is submitting a reconsideration request.
A reconsideration request is essentially a well thought-out apology to Google for bad SEO practices. It’s important to bear several steps in mind with regard to your reconsideration request. In addition to providing full documentation of all steps you’ve taken to improve your links, you’ll also want to show efforts you’ve made such as improving content and social media participation.
It’s also key that you take responsibility for your actions, and focus on how you’re going to continue building a great site in the future. Google Disavow can be one tool that helps you get back on track – but it has to be part of a broader strategy. The key overall is to show that you’ve reformed and made a sustained effort to address problem. If the issues were because you weren’t aware of policies and procedures, you need to show how you’ve become educated and will apply that information in the future.

4.         Crowdsourced spam reporting is bad for me and for search engines
One of the concerns that has come up is that as webmasters report links through Google’s Disavow tool, there will be backlash from crowdsourced spam reporting. The concern is that Google is going to go the extra mile and penalize not only the spam site, but also every site that links to it (intentionally or unintentionally).
So let’s say you have a blog on your website, but you’re not taking the necessary steps to protect yourself from trackback spam. Websites selling all sorts of unsavory goods are linking to your site. Then that site is reported by numerous people on Google Disavow, and all of a sudden your website has become a casualty of the next Penguin algorithm update.
While you may not have set out to pad your profile with bad links, you didn’t take the proper steps to protect your website or have them removed either. The key thing is to make sure to take the proper precautions to protect your site from a scenario like this.
You may feel that crowdsourced spam reporting is bad for search engines, but the reality is that Penguin 2.0 was implemented to improve the search experience. It’s up to you to do the work and ensure your site is safe. The best protection over the long-term is to conduct regular site audits as well as security audits, and address this as part of your overall site health plan. That’s much more effective and less stressful than doing damage control. For an excellent overview of WordPress Security, see this article, “The Definitive Guide to WordPress Security.”
If you’re guilty of paying for links or linking up to irrelevant sites, there’s no better time than now to start making amends. While Disavow is clearly not a magical solution for a bad link profile, it can be tremendously helpful for repairing your image in the eyes of Google. You just need to make sure you take the proper steps before you use it. So if you hear negative rumors flying around about the tool, be sure to take them with a grain of salt. If used properly, it can help your site rise from the ashes after Penguin 2.0.

How to “Steal” Your Competitors Traffic

I want to show a really awesome technic about how you can steal some of your competitor’s traffic and get higher ranking. And the best part is that it’s free.
I am not using any magic or black hat strategy. Yes all is white hat – and still you can steal some traffic to your own site.
Maybe your boss has asked you these questions –where do we get high quality links? How many do we need before getting our high ranking?
With this technique you can very easily and secretly check out how and why your competitor is getting their traffic.
So grab your coffee … ready?

Step 1) The James Bond step
First we are going to play a spy. We need to know why and how your competitor is getting all the traffic.
So we are using some reverse search engine technique.
So I am going to put on my eyeglasses. Well I will need some help from the free software called “SEO SpyGlass”. Just type “SEO SpyGlass” into a Google search and you will find it. Download it so it’s ready for use.

Step 2) Find your competitor
I have this website http://seotutorials2013.blogspot.com/ – and this is a blog about Search Engine Optimization – so I want to outrank the website www.Seroundtable.com.
You can also just find a top-ranking competitor and try to understand why they are ranking so well.

Step 3) Time to spy
I will write www.seroundtable.com and click next. Now the software will collect search engine data for that website. I will just take a minute or two then you are done.

When it’s done click finish – and say yes when it will ask you if you would like to update your project for backlinks factors now.
If the website you are checking has a lot of backlinks this step can take a few minutes. So get yourself a new cup of coffee now.

Step 4) Investigate your results
Now it’s time to check out the data we found in step one.

Now you can see the backlink page, the anchor text and much more relevant data.

Step 5) Knowledge is power
Now you have the power in your hands. You know which websites that are linked to your competitors website. So now it’s time for some dirty work.
Check out the websites on the list.
Some of the websites could be some kind of an industry list with company names. So be sure you are on the same list.
Maybe there are some blogs where you also can make a comment.
Maybe you should write an email to the owners of some of the websites and ask for a backlink to your website – because you have some relevant information too.
Well I will have to check some of the backlinks now …
